Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned: An Early Thanksgiving Gift Of Sorts

Yesterday I put in my order for the proof copy of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. I've also finished assembling the Kindle edition of the book, so once the print edition is OKed — which could happen as early as the end of this coming week — the book will finally be out for real.

Took me long enough, didn't it?

I'm sure I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: AONO was really, really not supposed to have taken this long. Towards the end of last year I had a bunch of things happen that I don't want to go on about in public, and whose repercussions ate into my spare time. These things happen; I'm not complaining so much as I am just outlining what I was up against.

It also didn't help that the book was about 50-60% longer than I expected it to be, but now that I'm done with it, I think it needed to be at that length. If I had cut it to fit into, say, 150K words or less, I would have gutted a lot of emotionally significant material, and it would have been slick and entertaining but not very deep. Sometimes a book needs to be 200K words, but I had to make sure they were the right 200K words.

It's always a weird feeling putting a book to bed. I'm proud of what I was able to pull off, even if I wonder if my approach to the material was the right one. But I know second-guessing what people want and how they want it is never the true way.

Last note: If you haven't seen the Behind The Scenes article series I recently completed about the book, go back and check it out. I think you'll enjoy seeing how this story emerged and where from, and how it turned into what we have now.
