Makes me think of the lyrics to the song "okkusenman"--the megaman song. I saw this version of it and got all choked up!

(and here it is with Japanese subtitles instead of English)

It's a kind of scream-o version of the song, but the animation so captures the feel of that melancholy Murakami talks about.

Murakami's book "Murder in a Lonely Country" also talks a great deal more about what he felt was Japan's immaturity as a nation. The book has not been published in the West, but the Japanese version (ISBN 4-938737-33-7) is bilingual. Highly recommended if you like his work in general. I'll probably write a review at some point.
